There's something truly magical about spending time in nature, isn't there? Whether you're hiking through lush forests, cycling along scenic trails, or simply enjoying a picnic with friends and family, Gatineau Park offers endless opportunities to connect with the great outdoors. But maintaining this pristine environment takes effort, and that's where you come in! By volunteering with us, you'll not only have the chance to explore the park in a whole new way but also play a crucial role in preserving its beauty for generations to come.
We have two exciting volunteer positions available, each offering a unique way to get involved:
Are you someone who loves to explore new trails and lend a helping hand to others along the way? Then our Volunteer Patrol position might be perfect for you! As a Volunteer Patroller, you'll have the opportunity to venture out solo, either hiking or biking through the park, and offer assistance to fellow users. Whether it's providing directions, sharing information about park regulations, or offering a friendly smile to passersby, you'll be making a positive impact on visitors' experiences.
If you're more of a hands-on individual who enjoys getting down and dirty, then our Trail Maintenance team is where you belong! Join us in maintaining and developing official trails in Gatineau Park as part of our Responsible Trail Management project. Working alongside a group of like-minded volunteers, you'll tackle tasks such as clearing debris, building walkways, and ensuring the trails are safe and accessible for all. Plus, you'll get to see the immediate results of your hard work as you help improve the park's trail network.
Location: Various areas within Gatineau Park, including Chelsea, Wakefield, the Southern sector, and Meech Creek Valley.
Description: As a Trail Maintenance Volunteer, you'll be part of a dedicated crew working on official trails in the park. Tasks may include moving branches and rocks, protecting tree roots, and building culverts and drainage ditches. The work is performed outdoors and requires appropriate footwear and clothing, but don't worry – we'll provide all the necessary equipment.
Commitment and Work Schedule: Trail crews operate from mid-May to late October, with shifts typically lasting three hours. Volunteers are asked to commit to at least six hours of work during the season (equivalent to two shifts).
Requirements: Volunteers must be 16 years of age or older, capable of manual labor, and comfortable working in variable weather conditions. Having your own means of transportation to and from Gatineau Park is also essential.
Assets: While not required, familiarity with Gatineau Park's mandate and trail building experience are considered assets. Don't worry if you're new to trail maintenance – we'll provide development activities to help you learn and grow in your role.
