What is Gatineau Loppet?

The Gatineau Loppet is Canada's largest international cross-country skiing event, and it's a true winter wonder. As part of the Worldloppet international event series, this race attracts around 2,500 skiers from all corners of the globe each year. Held in February, it takes place in the breathtaking Gatineau Park and offers various events of different distances to cater to all cross-country ski enthusiasts.

A Little History

The roots of the Gatineau Loppet date back to 1979 when it was known as the "Rivière Rouge" event near Lachute. Back then, it offered two courses – one at 55 kilometers and the other at 35 kilometers, more for leisurely skiing. Can you believe that nearly 1,000 skiers participated in the very first edition?

As the event grew, it moved to Gatineau Park in 1983 and became "Gatineau 55." In 1989, the race expanded with two 25-kilometer events, one in classic style and one in freestyle, replacing the 35-kilometer event. In 1996, it was rebranded as the "Keskinada Loppet" and celebrated its Canadian heritage. However, on its 30th anniversary in 2008, it was renamed the "Gatineau Loppet."

This event is unique as it's the only Worldloppet series race hosted in Canada. It truly has an international flair, with nearly one in five participants coming from outside Canada.

What's Worldloppet?

The Worldloppet Ski Federation, or simply Worldloppet, is an international sports federation dedicated to promoting cross-country skiing. Its goal is to spread the love for this sport through various ski races around the world.

Currently, Worldloppet brings together 19 long-distance ski races from America, Asia, Australia & Oceania, and Europe. Gatineau Loppet proudly represents Canada in this prestigious group. Imagine the diversity of experiences you can have by participating in these races!
